I have been a PGA professional since 2001 and after a brief stint playing as a tournament professional, I turned my head towards becoming a serious coach. I spent 8 years as the Head Assistant at The Warren Golf Club where I started to become more interested in coaching. Once I begun a career as a full time coach, I started to take further learning quite seriously. One of the first courses I undertook was the TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Level 1 golf fitness course.
Miguel Angel Jimenez
I then started down an avenue with TPI and furthered my learning by undertaking courses in TPI level 2 junior, TPI level 2 Golf professional and TPI level 2 Golf Biomechanics, which I had the privilege of learning under Phil Cheetham (Director of Sport Technology USA Olympic Team), Greg Rose and Dave Phillips (Head of TPI).
In 2010 I was recruited as a Coach for a company called Making Champions. We were based in Madrid and Sotogrande (Spain). There I became part of an elite team that worked together to enhance and manage the performance of elite touring Professionals and International amateurs. In our performance team we had professionals of many differing fields of expertise.
Jason Glass - Strength and Conditioning
Mike Wood - Strength and Conditioning
Tim Van Heusden - Biomechanist
Paul Chamberlain - European Tour Nutritionist
Zoe Chamberlain - European Tour Psychologist
Jason Floyd - European Tour/PGA Tour Professional Coach
Everybody around this table were proven leaders in their field, working with tour winners from the US to the European Tour, including Major Championship winners.
'Making Champions' Performance Team
As a performance team we planned and worked together to help all the players at the academy with every sport science and golf aspect covered. We had every means at our disposal and were leaders in the field with every possible piece of equipment from force plates to trackman, including world class facilities at the Sotogrande estate.
I became part of an elite team, learning from all my peers as well as coaching some world class players from the European Tour, PGA Tour, Asian Tour and LET Tour.
I spent everyday working with the same group of players. I looked after my stable and they had a programme by design that was periodised over the course of a whole year. I travelled to tournaments with them looking after their game during events. From course management preparation, post game debriefing and management in between rounds.
This was an amazing time in my career, getting to travel all around Europe to Tour events, and constantly learning so that we were always well versed in every cutting edge area of Golf development. It was part of my job to know and learn about all other leading coaches in Golf, from Butch Harmon through to Sean Foley. If they were notable, we learnt all about their methods. My job was a constant state of learning and application.
Notable players that came through our academy:
Manuel Del Los Santos
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Miguel Angel Jiminez
From there I had a brief spell in Northern Ireland where I got to work with some excellent players including 3 Walker Cup players, and spent time learning with Pete Cowan and Mike Walker (both multiple tour winning coaches). And working along side Seamus Duffy (Darren Clarke’s coach). I then came back home to England where I set up my own studio and I am now coaching full time. I am equipped with a unique set of skills which enable me to maximise the level of any golfer, from Tour player to beginner.
